The Crystal Cove Historic District is located along the wide sandy beach below the coastal bluffs where the seasonal Los Trancos Creek enters the Pacific Ocean. Since the early 1920’s this area has been used as a recreational refuge for people escaping the cities. It was used primarily for tent and trailer camping. By the 1930’s many roughly-crafted cabins and cottages had been erected by year-round residents in this serene little cove owned by The Irvine Company. In the late 1930’s The Irvine Company limited any further building in the cove and continued ranching their operations until 1979 when they sold the land to The State of California for a State Park.
The Crystal Cove Community is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. The Beachcomber Cafe is a partner of the California State Parks.
